The Environmental Jigsaw of Greenwashing

Debunking Greenwashing: The Truth About "Natural," "Eco-Friendly," and "Sustainable"

In today’s marketplace, brands worldwide, including some of the most prominent multinational corporations, often claim to be environmentally conscious. Buzzwords like "natural," "eco-friendly," and "sustainable" are tossed around with reckless abandon, sometimes in ways that distort the truth. This phenomenon, known as greenwashing, is the practice of misleading consumers into believing that a brand is more environmentally friendly than it actually is.

Back to Basics: What Do These Terms Really Mean?

Let’s go back to school for a moment to refresh our understanding of these commonly misused terms and learn how to spot genuine sustainability.

Natural:

"Natural" refers to anything derived directly from the environment. But don’t be fooled: just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s eco-friendly or sustainable. A product can be natural and still have a negative impact on the planet. For example, conventional cotton, which is grown in nature, is notorious for its environmental toll. Producing just one king-size bedsheet from conventional cotton can waste around 10,000 liters of water! In India, a country with a rich farming heritage, nearly 50% of all chemical fertilizers are used for cotton farming, leaving behind a trail of residual waste in lakes and rivers.

Let’s not forget, even oil is a natural substance, yet its extraction and use have long been detrimental to the environment. Thus, labeling something as "natural" doesn’t necessarily make it good for the planet.

Eco-Friendly:

An eco-friendly product is one that is beneficial or minimally harmful to the environment. These products might not always be natural or sustainable, but they make a positive impact by reducing environmental damage. Take, for instance, the Tesla Model S. Its electric nature makes it an eco-friendly choice, even though its components may not be entirely natural. The key is that eco-friendly products are designed to lessen the negative impact on our planet and represent a move in the right direction.

Sustainable:

Sustainability is all about creating products that have a prolonged lifecycle and minimizing the need for new materials, thereby reducing waste. Sustainable products might not always be natural or inherently eco-friendly, but they aim to reduce the overall burden on the environment. Even something as seemingly harmful as plastic can be part of a sustainable cycle if it is recycled, reused, and repurposed effectively. The concept of sustainability revolves around making the most of what we have and ensuring that products do not contribute unnecessarily to environmental degradation.

The Misuse of Buzzwords

It’s easy to see how brands can manipulate these terms to create a misleading narrative. "Natural," "eco-friendly," and "sustainable" are often used interchangeably, even when they don’t truly apply to the product in question. This is where D’Moksha stands apart.
